AABROO
Changing Lives. Giving Hope.
Aabroo is a word from Urdu, Pakistan’s national language. It means dignity and honor.
Aabroo Educational Welfare Organization is a nonprofit dedicated to providing education and vocational training to desperately poor children living in the slums of Lahore, Pakistan since 2003. These children have nothing, not even hope. Their houses are shanties, with no running water, electricity, or sanitary facilities. They are the children of rich people’s servants (drivers, butlers, cooks, house maids, gardeners). Aabroo’s mission is to prevent these children from becoming vagabonds, thieves, prostitutes, or worse.
Aabroo now has 9 schools serving more than 5,000 children. Furthermore, teachers travel to various slums to teach children in their shanty homes. Aabroo provides a hot lunch everyday as well as free medical care.
Pakistan does not have the widespread public education or welfare system that is available in the United States. While the government has some programs to help underprivileged children, they do not have enough resources to help everyone. These children live in terrible conditions and roam the streets all day, with many becoming beggars.
Aabroo is only supported by private donors and money they raise from the sale of recycling items collected from homes in the city.
Organizations like Aabroo can make a real difference, providing education, vocational training and hope for a better future.
